Sad to hear that Arthur has died. We remember him as a well respected, helpful and cordial member of the local community, living at Powillimount Cottages on Arbigland Estate, initially with his parents and 7 brothers. He remained living there for most of his life and was employed by the Blackett family as a very skilled and experienced gardener at Arbigland House and at The House on the Shore. He would often be seen cycling to and from his places of work and would stop to have a friendly chat with those he happened to meet.
When he left Powillimount, after many decades living in one of the two adjoining farm cottages there, these became holiday lets. The house where he lived now bears the name ‘Arthur’s Cottage’, a fitting tribute to a fine man!
We, the Harper family grew up on a neighbouring farm on the estate, Maxwellfield, and were ages and stages with the McCormick boys. We remember well how, in the late 1940s and into the 50s, Arthur’s mum would at times clear the middle of the floor in her living room so that we could enjoy evenings dancing to the music produced by Arthur’s latest piece of technology.
We held Arthur in very high regard and will remember him with great affection.
